How to Read a Certificate of Analysis

What a certificate of analysis actually is

A certificate of analysis, usually shortened to COA, is the test report for one batch of material. A lab takes a sample from that batch, runs it, and writes down what it found. The certificate is the record of that work.

Two ideas in there carry the whole document.

One batch. A COA is not a statement about a supplier, a brand, or a product line. It covers the exact lot the sample came from, and nothing else. A different lot needs a different report.

What it found. A COA reports measured numbers. It is not a target, a specification, or a number anyone hoped for. If the report says 99.1%, that is what the instrument read on that day, on that sample.

Everything below is a way of checking that a certificate in front of you is really doing those two things. The five things to check

1. The batch number, and whether it matches the vial

Start here, because it decides whether the rest of the page is about the thing in your hand.

Every certificate names a batch or lot number. The vial carries the same number on its label. If the two match, the report is about your material. If the report has no batch number at all, it is not a certificate of analysis. It is a picture of a good result from some sample, somewhere, at some point.

This is the single most common gap in a weak report, and it is also the easiest one to check. Read the label, read the report, compare the two strings.

2. The lab is named, and it is not the seller

A certificate should say who ran the test. A name, not "our lab" or "third-party verified".

The reason the name matters is conflict of interest. A supplier grading its own material has a reason to like the answer. An outside lab does not. So the useful question is not "was this tested", it is "who tested it, and do they work for the seller".

A named lab is also a checkable lab. You can search it, see whether it is a real analytical laboratory, and see what it specialises in. Some reports go further and carry a verification link with a unique key, so you can open the same result on the laboratory's own site rather than trusting the copy the seller handed you. That link is the strongest single feature a certificate can have, because it removes the seller from the chain entirely.

3. The purity figure, and what the HPLC line means

Purity is the number most people look at first. It is worth understanding what it is measuring.

HPLC stands for high performance liquid chromatography. In plain terms: the sample is pushed through a column that separates whatever is in it into parts, and a detector counts each part as it comes out the other end. Purity is then reported as the share of the total that the target compound made up. A 99% result means the target made up 99% of what the detector saw.

That last phrase is the honest limit of the figure. HPLC reports what the detector picks up at the wavelength it is set to. It does not catch every possible contaminant, and something invisible at that wavelength does not appear in the total at all. So a purity figure is a strong signal and not a complete one. Read it as "the material is what it says it is, at the level this method can see", not as "there is nothing else in the vial".

Two smaller points are worth knowing. A purity number without a report behind it is just a claim typed on a page. And a purity number quoted as a range, or as a brand-wide "99%+", is a marketing line rather than a measurement, because a measurement belongs to one batch.

4. The content figure, in milligrams

Under the purity line, a good report says how much of the compound the vial actually holds. That is a separate measurement, and it answers a different question.

Purity tells you what share of the contents is the target. Content tells you how much of the target there is. A vial can be 99% pure and still hold less material than the label says, because those two numbers are not linked.

The content figure is the one every calculation starts from. Anyone working out a concentration is working from the measured milligrams, not from the number printed on the label. That is the reason a certificate that reports purity but never reports content leaves a real gap.

One caveat that honest reports acknowledge: quantifying a freeze dried peptide carries a margin of error, usually in the range of 5 to 15%. That is a property of the measurement, not a sign of a bad batch. It is also a good reason to be suspicious of a report that quotes content to an impossible number of decimal places.

5. The test date

A certificate is a snapshot. The date tells you when the snapshot was taken.

Check that the dates make sense together: a sample cannot be tested before the batch it came from was made, and a report dated years before the vial you are holding was filled is describing different material. Reports that record several dates, when testing was ordered, when the sample arrived, and when the analysis was run, are easier to sanity check than reports with a single undated result.

The date also sets the boundary of what the report can promise. It describes the material as it was on that day. What happens to it afterwards is a storage question, not a testing question, which is why handling matters as much as documentation. Our peptide storage guide covers that side.

How to find ours

The lab reports page. This is the full list, one card per product, with the current batch on record. Open any card and you get the laboratory's own report: its task number, the dates, the batch number, the tests that were requested, the measured content in milligrams, the measured purity, any comments the lab recorded, the signature, and the verification link you can check on the lab's own site.

The card under Add to cart. Every product page carries the same certificate for the batch in stock, with the batch number, the purity, the content and the test date laid out as a short table, plus a view full report control that opens the document in place.

Two habits of ours are worth naming, because they are what the checks above are for. Samples go to the lab blind, which means the lab is asked which compound is present rather than told. And a product whose results are not back yet is listed as awaiting test results. It never gets a placeholder number, because a number nobody measured is the exact failure this whole document exists to prevent.

What a bad or missing COA looks like

The short list, drawn from the five checks above:

  • No batch number. The report cannot be tied to any specific material, including yours.
  • No lab named, or a report issued by the seller. There is no outside check in the chain.
  • A percentage with no report behind it. A purity figure printed on a product page, with no document to open, is a claim rather than a result.
  • A report you cannot open. A broken link, an image too small to read, or a file that never loads is the same as no report.
  • The same document across different batches. One certificate reused for every lot means the lots were never tested separately.
  • A brand-level purity promise. "All our products are 99%+ pure" is a sentence about marketing. A COA is a sentence about one batch.

None of these mean a supplier is dishonest. They mean the evidence is not there, and you are being asked to take the number on trust. The point of a certificate is that you do not have to.

Frequently Asked Questions
